Youth positions

Court Clerk
Check in with Youth Court Coordinator & receive night's paperwork
* Verify assigned jury members are in the courtroom
* Swear in the jury and the defendant
* Receive the "Constructive Sanctions" form (jury decision)
* Collect and deliver forms and binders back to Youth Court Coordinator
Time Required -- one evening a month for 3 - 6 months
Prerequisites: Complete Youth Volunteer form and attend volunteer training
Responsible to: Youth Court Volunteer Coordinator &/or adult assigned to that duty for the evening

Advocate
Check in with Youth Court Coordinator
* Contact defendant before the court date and prepare case presentation
* Attend pre-court meeting to participate in group work on case presentation
* Represent defendant's case at court and recommend sanctions to jury
Time Required -- 3 hours prep-time plus one evening a month for 3 - 6 months
Prerequisites: Complete Youth Volunteer form, Attend one volunteer training & serve on two jury nights
Responsible to: Youth Court Coordinator &/or adult assigned to that duty for the evening

Jury Member
Check in with Youth Court Coordinator and then with Court Clerk in assigned courtroom
* Attend jury instruction
* Hear Advocates' case presentation
* Ask defendant questions regarding case
* Decide appropriate sanctions for defendant
Time Required -- one evening a month for 3 - 6 months
Prerequisites: Complete Youth Volunteer form - NO TRAINING NECESSARY
Responsible to: Youth Court Volunteer Coordinator

Spanish-English Translator
Provide Spanish-English translation for non-English speaking youth and their family
* Attend pre-court meeting with defendant and family
* Attend Youth Court with defendant and family
* Attend post-trial meeting on night of court with defendant and family
* Attend Life Choices and any other classes assigned to defendant
Time Required -- varies on a case-by-case basis
Prerequisites: Complete Youth Volunteer form; Observe one Youth Court
Responsible to: Youth Court Coordinator



Adults (18+ years):

Advocate Mentor
Check in with Youth Court Coordinator
* Receive case summary, advocate names and contact info
* Contact Advocates to ascertain comfort level and offer services
* Follow up as needed
* Attend court and mentor Advocates as needed
Time Required -- varied as needed case by case
Prerequisites: Complete Adult Volunteer form and attend volunteer training
Responsible to: Youth Court Coordinator &/or adult assigned to that duty for the evening

Court Attendant
Check in with TVYC Coordinator
* Assist defendant, jury member and families in finding seats
* Call cases to order
* Escort juries to and from jury room
* Escort defendant, their family and jury decision form from jury to Youth Court Coordinator
* Maintain order during courtroom session
Time Required -- one evening a month for 3 - 6 months
Prerequisites: Complete Adult Volunteer form and attend volunteer training
Responsible to: Youth Court Coordinator &/or adult assigned to that duty for the evening

Jury Mentor
* Check in with Youth Court Coordinator and receive courtroom assignment, Jury Packet & Mentor's Binder
* Train/Instruct jury members re: rules and their responsibilities before court begins
* Mentor jury during their deliberations
* Notify Court Attendant when Jury has completed their deliberations
Time Required -- one evening a month for 3 - 6 months
Prerequisites: Complete Adult Volunteer form and attend volunteer training
Responsible to: Youth Court Coordinator &/or adult assigned to that duty for the evening

Spanish-English Translator
Provide Spanish-English translation for non-English speaking youth and/or their family
* Contact defendant and family via phone to explain the program and schedule pre-court meeting
* Attend pre-court meeting with defendant and family
* Attend Youth Court with defendant and family
* Attend post-trial meeting on night of court with defendant and family
* Possibly, attend Life Choices and any other classes assigned to defendant
Time Required -- varies on a case-by-case basis
Prerequisites: Complete Youth Volunteer form; Observe one Youth Court
Responsible to: Youth Court Coordinator

Case Manager
Check in with Youth Court Coordinator
* Attend Court night
* Join Coordinator in meeting with defendant and their family directly after defendant's trial
* Work with defendant on Sanctions action plan
* Keep in regular contact with defendant and their family during the 90 days of the defendant's participation with the program
* Attend Case Manager's meetings
Time Required -- Variable, as needed by case
Prerequisites: Complete Adult Volunteer form and attend volunteer training
